Sir Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb, on 14 October 1940, at King George’s Hospital, currently known as KGMU Hospital, Victoria Street, in Lucknow, which was then part of British India. The family lived in Maqbara, closer to the main shopping center of Hazratganj.

In 1948, after Indian independence, the family went on a three-week sea trip to Tilbury, Essex aboard the SS Ranchi. They lived in a company-supplied flat at Howrah near Calcutta. The family moved in with other relatives in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.

In 1950, a three-bedroom council house in nearby Cheshunt was allocated to them at 12 Hargreaves Close.

Cliff Richard’s mother is called Dorothy Marie Webb. She used to be called Dorothy Marie Dazely. She was born in the year 1920 to William Edward Dazely and Dorothy Edith Dazely. Her mother operated as the dormitory matron at the La Martiniere Girls’ School. She has a sister called Olive Gregory (Dazely).

Dorothy Marie Webb’s married Rodger Oscar Webb on 26 April 1939. They met while Rodger was working for the Indian Railways. They gave birth to four children, a son, and three daughters. Their son is Cliff Richard, and their daughters are Donella Webb, Joan Webb, and Jacqueline Ann Webb.

Donella Webb died in 2016, at the age of 73 years, after being ill for several months. She died of natural causes. Dorothy’s husband Rodger passed away and after his death, she remarried a man named Derek Bodkin. Their union didn’t last long and they got divorced. Dorothy battled Alzheimer’s disease for a decade.

Dorothy moved in with one of her kids, Joan. Her situation needed professional care so she was admitted to a home. She died on October 16, 2007, at the age of 87 years. In an interview, Cliff Richard spoke about the difficulties he and his sisters had in dealing with their mother’s condition.

Before Dorothy’s death, Cliff admitted that he had already mourned his mother’s death. He said: “My mother knows nothing about political uproars, about terrorists, she does not know what time it is, does not know what month it is, or how bad the weather is outside. She is living, but what it does take away is your life. My mother does not have a life.

I have talked with my sisters and said I personally felt as though I have already mourned my mum because the person we have with us is not the vibrant woman we all knew”. Sir Cliff Richard disclosed that he and one of his sisters have agreed to save themselves from the same prolonged misery by ending their lives early.

Cliff told Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour: “It doesn’t haunt me but I have discussed it with my sister and I said, ‘If this ­happens to me, don’t let it go on too long – and make sure I am looked after, as I don’t want to be a burden on anybody else.’

Cliff Richard became a patron of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust. He has donated to the dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK. He has helped to raise funds and awareness of the disease by speaking publicly about his mother’s condition.

Cliff Richard’s father is Rodger Oscar Webb. He was born on 23 December 1904, in Rangoon, Yangon Region, Myanmar. He is the son of Frederick William Webb and Donella Eugenie (Woodfall) Webb. He was a manager for a catering contractor that serviced the Indian Railways.

Rodger Oscar Webb got employed in the credit control office of Thorn Electrical Industries. He married Dorothy Marie Webb and they became parents of four children: son Cliff Richard, and daughters Donella Webb (1943–2016), Joan Webb, and Jacqueline Ann Webb.

Rodger Oscar Webb died on 15 May 1961, in Wood Green, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom, at the age of 56. He got sick for a long time and died afterward. He was buried in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

The death of Rodger Webb had a great impact on his son Cliff Richard. Cliff revealed that: “My father died very young. He missed the best parts of my career. When my father was sick, we became very close.”

Cliff also stated that “It wasn’t easy for any of us really, but he was a naughty person really, he did smoke a lot, But, no I didn’t. He continued: “That’s why I feel some times that my anger if I’ve got any, comes out when I think he missed the best things in my life.”
